Lieutenant Jori Zann
Name Jori Zann
Position Assistant Chief Engineering Officer
|Physical Description||Although they are not a Federation species, the Trill appear remarkably similar to Humans. The major difference is the Trill spots; they follow along the hairline and then go down the neck on either side. As far as his personal appearance, Jori is quite meticulous about maintaining a high standard of fitness and grooming. He wears his hair in a conservative and easily managed style. Jori’s Eyes are a deep cobalt blue.|
|Other Family||Much of the Zann family still resides on Trill, a world in a region beyond the current reaches of Federation space.|
Personality & Traits
|General Overview||Jori is an intelligent and very technically knowledgeable individual; he does, however, know how to kick back and have a good time. He is generally serious when on duty, but he also has a deadpan sense of humor and a dry sarcastic wit that help him inject a little fun into the daily routine. Outside of work Jori is very sociable and a good conversationalist.|
|Strengths & Weaknesses||Jori has a good background in Starfleet technology, and he thinks well on his feet. He is an efficient manager and sets high expectations for both himself and others.
Conversely, Jori is a very stubborn individual and will rarely admit to being wrong. And although he has a long fuse, once he gets angry he stays that way for quite some time.
|Ambitions||Jori would like to visit Trill someday. He aspires to be a Chief Engineer.|
|Hobbies & Interests||Jori likes all kinds of music, although he has developed a fondness for the Terran musical form called the “power ballad”. He enjoys eating, but really does not enjoy cooking at all. Jori stays on top of current events, more for conversation purposes than anything else.|
|Personal History||Jori Zann was born in 2226, the only child of two Trill mining engineers residing on the Federation mining station at Corvan II. Despite the fact that Corvan was primarily known as a mining station, it had complete facilities to support families and was a self-governing Federation colony in its own right. Jori’s parents had spent most of their lives living apart from other Trills, so little knowledge of his native culture was passed on to Jori. Instead, Jori’s parents taught him how to assimilate and blend in well with others. These strategies served him well, as most of his fellow students on Corvan had never even heard of the planet Trill (although by Federation Law, Jori was a citizen of the UFP).
Being the child of mining engineers, naturally Jori developed his own interest in rocks and geology. His parents worked diligently to pass on their knowledge, both about rocks in particular and science & technology in general. In his teen years, Jori began to gravitate more toward technology; and since Corvan was a major dilithium producer, there was always a Federation starship nearby. When a Jori was 17, he met and struck a friendship with Captain Gabriel Lorca of the Buran. Lorca was impressed with the young Trill, and submitted a letter of recommendation to Starfleet on Jori’s behalf in 2244. Jori took the Academy entrance exams and passed with flying colors.
Jori was admitted to Starfleet’s rigorous Starship Engineering program. At the time, Starfleet was still very much dominated by Humans. Jori fit in well enough though, and had an extensive circle of friends encompassing more than twenty different species. The young Trill did well in just about every class, graduating in the top one percent of his class in 2248. Captain Lorca offered Jori a posting on the Buran; because he did not want any appearance of favoritism, Jori turned it down in favor of a posting on the Walker class USS Atlas. He served on the Atlas as a Fusion Power Specialist for five years, all the while finishing up his Doctorate in warp field theory. Once he completed his PhD in 2253, Jori began teaching entry level engineering courses and intermediate to advanced warp theory classes in the Science division.
After three years in the classroom, the onset of the War with the Klingon Empire made Jori want to get back into space. He accepted a slot as Assistant Chief Engineer of the USS Hades in 2256.
